‘Exercise not only changes your body, it changes your mind, your attitude and your mood’
Fitness, with various definitions, is more popularly known as a lifestyle than just an activity. Concerned about their students’ fitness levels, The Bhawanipur Education Society College held Fit Bhawanipur Week 2025, a week-long festivity celebrating the idea of fitness. It was held from March 17th to March 23rd, 2025. The event aimed to spread awareness about individual and communal fitness.
The event was officially commemorated with the delivery of a welcome speech by the Rector and Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Dilip Shah, who highlighted the importance of fitness and urged the students to get the most out of these sessions. He then went on to felicitate the guest for the event, which kicked off with the first event, “Eat Right”, which was an interactive session between Mr. Soumyendu Ghosh, a renowned clinical dietician, nutritionist, and lifestyle counsellor, and the participants. The speaker imparted his expertise in fitness and health into a presentation that added immense value to the students’ lifestyle.
Moving further, a push-up competition was held where Mr. Shyamantak Ganguly, an alumnus of our college and a 3rd Dan full-contact Karate Back Belt and a five-time national champion, was invited as the chief guest. Conducting the competition with a series of three different push-ups devised into rounds, the participants faced a first-hand test of their strength levels.
The event furthered progressed into the third day event, which was Yoga and Mental fitness, introducing the participants to the practices and ideologies of yoga for the first time, Mr. Tushar Ali, an expert in yoga practices took the task under his wing to inculcate into the students the importance of the practices of yoga and how to perform the same in a fun way, his techniques undoubtedly proved effective as the participants performed asanas such as Surya-namaskar and Kamar-maddod asana.
The event focused on fitness overall, which also included countless sports, keeping in mind the fourth-day event held was Kabaddi which was held under the supervision of Mr. Swarup Ghosh, a national kabaddi player and all India Kabaddi Team Coach who not only supervised the event, but also exposed the students to the highly physical sport of kabaddi which helps one develop numerous aspects of their mental and physical being like their strength, speed and teamwork.
With the fifth day having approached, the organisers had a unique plan in their minds, putting the fitness levels of the participants to the test, quite literally. The fifth-day event was a Fitness Test, which was a series of various exercises that were a test of the participant’s endurance, upper and lower body strength. The event commenced, being overseen by a special guest, Mr. Manpreet Singh Grewal, a FIBA-certified basketball coach and coach of the Calcutta University basketball team. The event mainly focused on providing the participants with statistics of how fit they are and, if possible, how to improve.
Karate, an ancient Japanese martial art which translates to bare hand, has proven itself to be arguably the most effective base martial art for anyone and everyone to learn. With the same ideology, the sixth-day event was held, named Karate and Self-defence. With experts such as Mr. Shihan Shibayan Ganguly and Mr. Shyamantak Ganguly, who have both achieved an array of laurels in their common field of karate, the participants were surely in for a ride as the guests talked about various self-defence techniques that one can implement in actual day-to-day life.
The seventh day finally dawned, and with it came a new page in the history of our college, the Parents’ Involvement event, where the participants of the previous events were asked to bring their parents to the college campus. Graced by the presence of the Joint Secretary of our Society, Mr. Jitendra Shah and the Rector & Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Dilip Shah, the event commenced where all the activities conducted through the week were highlighted, talked about and discussed with the main focus being making the parents aware of the guiding forces behind their children. The event was wrapped up with The Fit Bhawanipur Week having successfully achieved their objective of spreading the idea of fitness, this time not only among the students but also their families.
Mr. Bhavin Parmar, our Sports Officer, concluded the event by affirming that by teaching one student about fitness, we successfully spread the idea to their families, making it an impactful event.
