The department of Political Science organized a field trip for the students of the Third Semester of Political Science Honours on August 31st, 2019. Fifty students and all the faculty members of the Department of Political Science undertook this field trip which covered two important museums around the city.
The first place of visit was the Gandhi Smaarak Sangrahalay in Barrackpore. The students spent more than one and a half hours looking around the museum and seeing the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi along with learning about his political philosophy and views. Artefacts and relics from Gandhi’s life also piqued interest in the students. The audio-visual arrangements helped the students to see visuals from India’s freedom struggle and get immersed and inspired by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
Finally, the students were taken to Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the ancestral home and museum dedicated to the Bard of Bengal, Rabindranath Tagore. The students saw the mesmerizing location of many of the poets works, pieces of art, the place where he breathed his last and where he and his family was born. Visuals from his life, his poems, his paintings and his philosophical outpourings were moving for the students and teachers alike. The students also saw the newly curated wings of the museum which are dedicated to Tagore’s travels to USA, China and Japan respectively.
These places and respective personalities are also integral parts of the syllabus of the University of Calcutta for the ongoing semester, thereby adding to the depth and dimension of their understanding of the things the students are learning in the classrooms.
