Wednesday 17th February 2016 marked the closure session of Commerce Plus – a unique six month diploma programme developed and offered by the BESC. The event was graced by BESC Chairman Sri Champakbhai Doshi, Vice Chairman Sri Mirajbhai Shah, Central Committee member Smt. Naliniben Parekh, and Dean of Students Affairs Prof. Dilip Shah.
Commerce Plus programme can be rightly termed a brainchild of Sri Miraj Shah and Prof. Dilip Shah who wanted to address the problem of academically trained but under-skilled graduates who are unable to bridge the mismatch between industry requirements of fresh manpower and academia’s ability to supply adequately empowered workers. Apart from the usual academic skills, a fresh graduate is expected to have good interpersonal, communication and computer skills and is expected to work with the team – requirements that are not properly addressed by the present curriculum driven academic system.
The answer was Commerce Plus, a 240 hour ,six month long, comprehensive programme structured to train and develop the participating student’s skills through relevant workshops, seminars, class room sessions and industry and corporate visits leading to real-time interaction – all conducted by leaders and experts in their respective areas. The students were trained in public speaking, group discussion, personality development, creative writing and exposed to commercial software like Excel and Tally. They attended various workshops like Secrets of Capital Market, Export Import Business Management, Digital Marketing and Marketing Communications among others.
Out of 166 students, only 87 found themselves eligible to get the diploma. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dilip Shah the moving force behind Commerce Plus said “the success of the programme can be measured in the fact that each and every student of the programme can confidently speak in public and formulate and air their thoughts. An important skill not found in many a bright person.”
Mr. Miraj Shah commented “the college is taking effective steps and it can rightly be termed as a paradigm shift towards better academics”. He highlighted the importance and power of English Speaking ability and Computer Skills in one’s life. Congratulating the graduating class, he termed them as ambassadors of the changes taking place in BESC.”
Students shared their class room experiences, before bidding adieu to daily classes and their Commerce Plus mates. It was also a time to rejoice their newly acquired skills and prepare to put them in practice in the world outside the campus walls.
Also present in the send-off were Prof. Vijay Kothari and Prof. Divyesh Shah, who coordinated and managed the day to day affairs of Commerce Plus. ‘It was a honour to have been associated with this game-changer. The first batch of Commerce Plus was indeed a great journey and a memory that I will cherish throughout my life’, summed up Prof. Vijay Kothari.
The session ended on a note of enthusiasm and a group photo session.
