Dr. Falguni Dey initiated his talk by presenting the geographical framework of Tanzania, emphasizing its diverse topography, strategic location in East Africa, and the significance of its borders shaped by colonial interventions. He elaborated on the historical evolution of Tanzania’s political geography, tracing its journey from pre-colonial tribal states through the period of German and British colonial rule, to the post-independence formation of the United Republic of Tanzania under the leadership of Julius Nyerere. He shared his experience of climbing the Mt. Kilimanjaro, and illustrated how Kilimanjaro holds geographical, cultural, and economic importance—serving as a hub for eco-tourism, environmental conservation, and national pride.
Outcome of the event: The event successfully broadened students’ understanding of Africa’s geographical and political landscape, particularly Tanzania’s evolution as a nation. It also encouraged participants to approach historical and geographical study with a holistic perspective, linking physical landscapes with political, cultural, and environmental processes.
