Objective of the event: To provide students with a deeper understanding of the politico-geographical evolution of Tanzania and the geographical significance of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Brief description of the event: The Department of History and Geography in collaboration with IQAC, The Bhawanipur Education Society College, organised an invited lecture on the theme “Politico–Geographical History of Tanzania and Mighty Kilimanjaro.” The resource person for the event was Falguni Dey, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Women’s Christian College. Dr. Falguni Dey initiated his talk by presenting the geographical framework of Tanzania, emphasizing its diverse topography, strategic location in East Africa, and the significance of its borders shaped by colonial interventions. He elaborated on the historical evolution of Tanzania’s political geography, tracing its journey from pre-colonial tribal states through the period of German and British colonial rule, to the post-independence formation of the United Republic of Tanzania under the leadership of Julius Nyerere. He shared his experience of climbing the Mt. Kilimanjaro, and illustrated how Kilimanjaro holds geographical, cultural, and economic importance—serving as a hub for eco-tourism, environmental conservation, and national pride.
Outcome of the event: The event successfully broadened students’ understanding of Africa’s geographical and political landscape, particularly Tanzania’s evolution as a nation. It also encouraged participants to approach historical and geographical study with a holistic perspective, linking physical landscapes with political, cultural, and environmental processes.
He passed away in 1994. Yet, the melodies that he bequeathed, lingers to haunt a Nation, is hummed by bitter foes across borders and continues to be one of the most potent weapons in India’s arsenal as she tries to diplomatically push the boundaries of her sphere of influence.
