The Department of English, The Bhawanipur Education Society College had organised the PG Students’ Seminar in the Jubilee Hall from 9:45AM to 5:00 PM. The theme of the seminar was ‘Witches and Other Night-Fears: Literary Representations and Cinematic/Media Adaptations.’ A call for papers was circulated amongst the students of PG semesters II and IV.
The objective of the seminar was to explore the cultural significance of witches and other nocturnal fears through an exploration of their multifarious representations in literature and their adaptations into cinema as well as other forms of media and cultural artefacts. The seminar aimed to provide a platform for examining the symbolic and psychological significance of these representations. Students presented original, well researched papers focusing on the several sub-topics mentioned in the call for papers. The students had prepared several engaging Powerpoint presentations. There was a total of twenty-three presentations which were divided into three sessions followed by a Q/A round. The papers presented were judged by a panel of judges comprising of Dr. Niladri R. Chatterjee, Professor of the Department of English, University of Kalyani, as the external expert and Dr. Gargi Talapatra, Head and Assistant Professor of the Department of English, The Bhawanipur Education Society College, as the internal expert.
The welcome address was delivered by Prof. Ananyya Banerjee, M.A. Co-ordinator, Department of English, The Bhawanipur Education Society College. The sessions were conducted by the PG seminar co-ordinators Prof. Sonal Kapur and Prof. Sayan Chatterjee. At the end of all the sessions, the winners were announced: Shatabdi Roy (1st), Suchetana Das (2nd) and Agnajita Chakraborty (3rd). The student editors of Thoughtspell, Students’ Magazine of the Department of English were felicitated. The seminar came to an end with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Sonal Kapur.
