Concept Hall, July 26th, 2018. On this day in 1999, the Indian army had successfully wrested control of the vantage peaks from the clutches of the Pakistani army personnel masquerading as terrorists who had surreptitiously entered deep into India territory and dug themselves in. The battles that followed, were some of the fiercest in the annals of high-altitude warfare, not to mention the fact that it was an engagement between two nuclear powers, which had the potential of scaling up to acquire menacing proportions. Casualty figures of Pakistani armed personnel are hard to establish. On the Indian side, the official figures are 527 dead and 1363 wounded.
Students, teachers and members of the management and staff of the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) paid glowing tributes to the heroes who had laid down their lives while defending the borders, reminiscing and saluting their selfless sacrifice.
Wing Commander Rajesh Kumar of the Indian Air Force, accompanied by three Junior Commanding Officers was the Guest of Honour on the solemn occasion and was welcomed to the college by Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs of BESC. Dr Divyesh Shah, Head of the morning Commerce Section of the college and senior member of the faculty Prof Minakshi Chaturvedi were also present. WC Rajesh Kumar explained the game changing role that was played by the IAF during the Kargil War explaining how the Indian forces had braved the odds that were heavily staked against them to wrest victory.
Patriotic songs were presented by the members of the NCC unit of BESC – and such was the emotionally charged appeal of the tunes that everyone in the audience had spontaneously joined in. This was followed by a presentation on the Kargil War, the thought, content and execution of which was lauded, even by the men in the uniform.
Impressed by the level of motivation shown by the students, WC Rajesh Kumar urged them to buck up and fall in line so that a battalion of NCC (Air Wing) could be raised in the college with immediate effect.
The event was also utilised in full by the NCC Unit of the BESC to induct the new blood in its ranks. Sweets were distributed to all the participants.
The students of The Bhawanipur Education Society College had the opportunity to attend a lecture by Dr. Durga Biswas. The lecture was a prologue to an Intra College debate which refreshed the minds of the anxious, war hungry warriors-of-words. Dr. Durga Biswas’ aim was to enrich the students with a study of man’s nature portrayed …
