The JMC batch of 2020-23 visited the AIR (All India Radio) office at the Akashvani Bhawan, Kolkata on the 6th and 7th of December, 2022. The students were accompanied by the professors. We were shown the basic functioning of the radio in Kolkata along with the frequencies associated with AIR, the different departments, and lastly the Radio jockeying by the RJs. We were divided into groups and batch-wise the group was sent to the different rooms which consisted of the different stages where the radio recording and streaming were done. The people working at the office explained the different frequencies and channels and their respective reach throughout the city and country, along with their reach to smaller towns and villages in West Bengal. The recording room for the talk shows as well as the recording room for the songs and musical instruments was also shown to us. The editing room was the other place we had seen which consisted of all the necessary equipment needed for immediate editing as well as lengthy and elaborate editing. The next point was the room where the RJ was doing the live recording of the shows. The RJ recorded the shows playing the jingles, and songs and answering the questions sent by the listener to the RJs. The people at the AIR office were extremely professional and the visit gave every one of us immense knowledge about the Radio industry.
