January 26th 2019, Turf. The Bhawanipur Education Society College makes it a point to celebrate the Republic Day by specifically remembering and dedicating the occasion to a freedom fighter, someone who had sacrificed his all for the Nation. This year, the occasion was dedicated to Khudiram Bose, who at the time of his hanging was eighteen years and seven months old, making him one of the youngest revolutionaries in India.
The National flag was hoisted by the members of the managing committee of the college. The National anthem was then sung by Sourav Bhattacharjee, the Crescendo faculty of the college, to which all the present lent their voices. The event was formally opened with the release of a hundred balloons in the colours of the National Flag that floated up amidst loud cheers from the assembled crowd.
Prof Suman K Mukherjee, Director General of the college, spoke on behalf of the Management, invoking Tagore and the spirit of the freedom struggle with “Ekla Cholo Re” – Open thy mind, Walk alone / We are not afraid, Walk alone. He underscored the need to break out from the shackles of individualism and embrace the collective, the National, for the greater common good.
An impressive march past followed in which the students of the BGES and BESC took part, to the drum beats of the school students. This was followed by the beautiful rendition of patriotic songs accompanied by musical instruments which too were played with aplomb by the school students. They then proceeded to stage a performance wherein the sacrifices made by the common citizens of the Nation during the freedom struggle were portrayed in a manner that left an indelible mark in the hearts of the audience.
There was a quick show of martial arts followed by a dance performance by the Gujarati students of the college. This was followed by a medley of patriotic songs by the BESC students.
Finally, a fitness mania, wherein students showcased their gymnastic talents was staged.
Tricolour flags were provided to all present as a mark of the occasion and all the dignitaries were felicitated by the draping of scarves that proudly sported the Saffron, White and Green.
Pradeep Sheth, ex-officio member of the Governing Body of the BESC was felicitated by the student organisers of the Republic Day event. Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs of the college was adjudged the best dressed man and Katashru Dutta, the best dressed woman. Both were felicitated by Governing Body member Nalini Parekh.
