An Offline Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM) was organized by the Department of Economics, The Bhawanipur Education Society College, Kolkata for the students of Semester IV from 11am to 1pm.
The purpose of the PTM was two-fold: (i) to provide information to the parents regarding the students of the running 4th semester of the B.Sc. Economics Honours programme under the CCF structure; and (ii) to address any queries, suggestions, and grievances from the parents regarding the course structure, teaching methods, class attendance, syllabus and study materials provided for the students enrolled in this session.
The meeting was conducted in the presence of the following teachers of the Department: Anupa Ghosh, Dr. Ivy Das Gupta, Dr. Purba Roy Choudhury, Ms. Anuradha Dutta and Dr. Samyo Basu as parents of 14 students from Semester IV came as per their convenience within the stipulated time between 11am to 1pm.
The parents clarified their doubts about the general matters regarding the course structure and academic performance of their respective children, notable among them are the following:
Whether B.Sc. Economics Honours programme under the CCF structure is a compulsory four-year course or can one opt out of it after the third year.
Whether it will then be considered an Honours degree or not.
Whether the fourth year of the B.Sc. Economics Honours programme under the CCF structure will have a compulsory research-oriented curriculum or one can opt for it without research.
The implications that the last year of the B.Sc. Economics Honours programme under the CCF structure is likely to have on the Masters programme if one wishes to pursue further studies?
The implications for the job market, especially like data analytics or research project assistant?
The teachers clarified their doubts to the best of their abilities as per the proposed course structure under CCF as provided by the Calcutta University, but acknowledged that it is subject to further modifications.
The teachers brought it to the attention of the parents that attendance of the students has been abysmally low in the recent semester often affecting the flow of classes and completion of syllabus. The parents agreed to it that Honours classes are the priority for the students and all co-curricular activities under the college and other interests and hobbies must be accorded a secondary priority. Some parents expressed concerns over the absence of attendance criteria under the CCF structure and requested the teachers to ponder over the consequences.
Lastly, the parents filled up the feedback form sharing their insights and suggestions that would contribute to improvement in the services of the department towards better delivery of knowledge and development of employable skills among the students as always promised by the institution.
