The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, in collaboration with the Library Committee of The Bhawanipur Education Society College, organised a book launch event for the book volume titled Indian Communication Tradition: Select Gleanings, edited by Dr. Kapil Kumar Bhattacharyya, and published by Bloomsbury. The program began with the audience observing a moment of silence in memory of Prof. J. S. Yadava, former Director of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), to honour his immense contribution to the field of communication studies. The event was graced by eminent academicians, including Prof. Biplab LohoChoudhury, Prof. Kripa Shankar Chaubey, and Sri Subir Ghosh. Prof. LohoChoudhury noted that the book is the first of its kind to focus specifically on the Indian communication tradition and expressed hope that the book would contribute to a deeper understanding of the same. Prof. Chaubey observed that the book explores India’s indigenous communication traditions and offers valuable insights into its communication heritage. Prof. Ghosh underscored the importance of the book for understanding the discipline of communication from the standpoint of the Indian Knowledge Tradition. The Foreword to the book has been written by Prof. Wimal Dissanayake, an internationally acclaimed scholar on Asian communication, media and film studies. In his Foreword, Prof. Dissanayake has emphasised the need to question the Western dominance in communication studies and to explore the non-Western intellectual traditions, which necessarily include the Indian tradition. Prof. Dissanayake’s foreword endorses the value of the book in attempting a deep academic inquiry into this important yet underexplored area of communication studies. The book, a partial outcome of the ICSSR-sponsored International Seminar organised by The Bhawanipur Education Society College in 2024, reflects the college’s vibrant research culture and the sustained, deep commitment of its authorities to promote innovative research endeavours rooted in the Indian Knowledge System.
