September 27th, 2019. Jubilee Hall. Euphonious is sound that is pleasing to the ears, music that opens the door to the soul. For the college going crowd to Kolkata and its suburbs, the very name Euphonious is now like music to the ears as this music fest has already curved out a distinct niche in their hearts. For the students of the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) too, Euphonious is sweet music though for reasons slightly different – for one, it is another fest that the students organise themse4lves from concept to communication, secondly because Euphonious provides them with an unique and time-tested platform to showcase their talents and finally because, winners that they habitually are, these musically inclined talented lot of BESC look forward to lift the trophy that is in any case their own.
This year, led from the front by Sourav Goswami, the universally loved music teacher of the BESC, the format of the competition was tweaked with two broad classifications – solo and group events, under which the different engagements were conducted. In Group A, Euphonious had solo eastern, solo western, solo Bollywood, solo instrumental, solo rapping and solo beat boxing. In the second Group were ranged Easter, Wester, Bollywood Folk and Unconventional Orchestra.
The list of Judges who presided over the respective events and selected the winners was as impressive as the extremely high quality of the performances. Most of the judges were overwhelmed by the sheer energy that, as one put it, “engulfs the campus”; the hospitality that was meted out to them; the sheer professionalism with which the event was organised and the talent that was put on display by the participants. “I would not have thought that such an event could be organised by college students had I not attended Euphonious” said one judge gushing, “I will consider it an honour and a pleasure to be back here again and again. Would love also to do musical workshops with the students and help them take their talents to the logical destination”.
The Judges line-up was, to put things mildly, awesome and that the performers held on to their acts in front of the thriving audience and such a star-studded judge cast was in tself laudatory:
Avishek Natta – one of Kolkata’s most up and coming vocalists who is also an accomplished guitarist and music composer;
Srijita Mitra – veteran jingle singer, Zee Bangla Sa Re Ga Ma performer and a perennial favourite with Tollywood and Reality shows;
Dil fake X Captain Singh-a – Kolkata’s biggest hip hop duo who have individually and as a duo mesmerised audiences everywhere from Red Bull Spotlight to MTV Hustle, apart from having a dedicated fan following in the digital media where they have released a number of individual tracks;
Fuchii – with three tracks booming in Youtube and having worked in all the hip nightspots in town, Valentino needs no introduction to the connoisseurs;
Brata Deb – a composer, writer and singer of the Latino-Funk genre, he has not only worked with some of the biggest names in the world of music but has also been associated with a number of hit movies;
Arkapravo Ghosh – the guitarist of swell bands like Orient Express and Colour Bridge, this astrophysicist and professor needs no introduction either as a vocalist or as a guitar virtuoso. His genre is Latin and Jazz
Kaustav Banerjee – a “throw-up” from the school / college music scene, he was the quintessential “rock-er” of “Rockbaaj” who could not be tamed as he gave up a tempting job in Bangalore to return to take on the stage. Corporate India’s loss has certainly been music’s gain. His new band is called Grooverz, which is, shall we say, Groovy!
BESC emerged as the overall champions, leaving the other participating institutions, even collectively, way behind.
