“Keep calm and smash hard” – these two attributes were heavy on the players who participated in the 2024 edition of the Bhawanipur Badminton Championship (BBC) organized by The Bhawanipur Education Society College. Badminton is a popular sport in India as it is the second-most played sport in India after Cricket. To give an edge to promising players, the college hosted an intra-college badminton championship from 18th January to 20th January 2024, where the participants enjoyed playing the sport.
The Championship saw a good participation of more than 150 students from all streams and academic years; as over 90 participants took part in the Singles Male category, 16 participants took part in the Singles Female Category, and 26 teams consisting of mixed doubles category. BBC began on the 17th of January 2024 with round 1 and round 2 of the Men’s singles categories. At the end of round 1, 42 players entered the 2nd round from which 21 participants made it to the finals of the game. All the matches in the championship were in the knockout format. Day 2, i.e., 18th January 2024 saw different rounds of matches from the doubles category. After the final rounds of the Doubles category were over, round 3 and other subsequent rounds leading up to the finals for the Men’s singles category commenced. 19th of January 2024 had all the matches lined up for the Women’s singles category. With 16 participants, the day saw an early end to the game as there were only 4 rounds to be played.
On the 18th of January 2024, the winner of the Male Singles category was Ishaan Aryan and Sahaan Ahmad was the 1st runner-up, and Medhannsh Mall was the 2nd runner-up. On the same day, the winners of the Doubles category were Yash Vardhan Gupta and Manasvi Jain, the 1st runner-ups were Rishank Sarvesh Gupta and Hasti Dharmesh Tolia while the 2nd runner-up were Anish Mishra and Laiba Khan. On the 19th of January 2024, the winners of the Women’s Singles category were declared where Shireen Ahamed was the winner, Saanvi S Ganeshan was the 1st runner-up, and Puja Saraf was the 2nd runner-up in this category.
On January 25, 2024, the distribution of medals took place, led by the Rector and Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Dilip Shah, along with Prof. Minakshi Chaturvedi, Coordinator of the Commerce Morning department. The recipients’ faces lit up with joy, a powerful motivator for any dedicated sportsperson!
