The Department of Commerce UG (Afternoon and Evening Section) organised an invited talk on the History, Milestones and Market Microstructure of the Indian Stock Market on August 31, 2024. The event attracted 99 participants, including faculty members, organising committee members and students.
The talk began with an opening address by Ms. Gargi Das Bhattacharya, the Organising Secretary and a welcome address by Dr. Joyeta Bhadury, Co-ordinator of the Faculty Enrichment Committee, Department of Commerce UG (Afternoon and Evening Section). The felicitation ceremony was then conducted by the compere, Ms. Ria Saha, honouring the resource person, Prof. (Dr.) Tanupa Chakraborty, Professor and Head, Department of Commerce, University of Calcutta, along with dignitaries Dr. Subhabrata Ganguly, Teacher-in-Charge, The BESC; and Prof. Dilip Shah, Rector and Dean of Student Affairs, The BESC. The ceremony concluded with the formal release of the book “Changing Paradigm in the Fields of Commerce, Volume-I” by the Department of Commerce (Afternoon and Evening Section), The BESC, by the resource person and the dignitaries present.
Subsequently, Dr. Subhabrata Ganguly and Prof. Dilip Shah delivered enriching addresses that highlighted the significance of the event. Ms. Saha then took the opportunity to introduce Prof. (Dr.) Tanupa Chakraborty as the keynote speaker, providing an overview of her extensive expertise in the stock market and highlighting her academic achievements and professional experience. Prof. (Dr.) Tanupa Chakraborty began the lecture by emphasizing the stock market’s initiation as a pivotal moment in financial history, marking the formalization of trade and investment. She highlighted the evolution of market mechanisms over time and how they have shaped modern market operations. The audience was encouraged to reflect on the importance of regulatory frameworks in ensuring transparency and fairness in trading practices.
Concluding the lecture, Ms. Saha led an interactive session, giving students the opportunity to delve deeper into and clarify concepts related to both national and global stock markets. The event culminated with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Saspo Chakraborty, Vice Principal, Department of Commerce (Afternoon and Evening Section), The BESC, who expressed appreciation to the management, TIC, Rector, as well as the resource person, faculty members, organizing committee members and students for their presence and active participation.
