Department:Economics Date: 30th November 2024 No. of participants: 15 students as participants, 14 students from audience and 5 faculty members
The Department of Economics at The Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) proudly hosted ECO ENIGMA, an Intra-Semester Peer Event Quiz Competition, on November 30, 2024. Starting at 11:30 a.m., the event brought together students from all semesters of the Economics department, creating an atmosphere brimming with excitement, intellectual curiosity, and camaraderie. Fifteen enthusiastic participants, divided into five teams of three, eagerly joined the competition, which aimed to hone their knowledge of economics alongside history, art, literature, politics, entertainment, and general knowledge.
The program commenced with an engaging welcome by the quizmasters, Varun Vora and Priyanka Bardia, both from the 5th semester. Their eloquence and enthusiasm set the tone for the event as they introduced the participants, audience, and faculty to the four thoughtfully curated quiz rounds. Their explanation of the quiz’s purpose and format not only clarified the rules but also heightened the anticipation for what was to come.
The Thrilling Rounds
The competition opened with a Rapid-Fire Round, designed to energize and excite everyone present. Team 1—comprising Abhishek Shaw (Sem 5), Khyati S. Bansal (Sem 3), and Madhusa Bhattacharya (Sem 1)—immediately took the lead. The 2nd round challenged participants to identify “X” and “Y,” representing people, places, or events from history, with no penalty for wrong answers, encouraging bold attempts.
The 3rd round, Who Am I?, brought a new level of excitement, as participants deduced personalities or places with a decreasing point value for each successive hint. Wrong answers, however, resulted in a 10-point deduction, injecting an element of strategic caution. This round was a clear highlight, as it demanded both quick thinking and risk management, spurring intense competition between two closely matched teams by its conclusion. Audience questions interspersed between rounds added a lively dynamic, showcasing the audience’s impressive knowledge and making the event all the more engaging.
The final round proved to be a game-changer. Offering both ‘bouncing’ and ‘pouncing’ options, teams had the opportunity to boost their scores or risk deductions for incorrect answers. The diversity of questions and strategic complexity of this round kept everyone on their toes, including the faculty members, who were visibly impressed by the ingenuity of the questions. Thanks to the meticulous scoring by Preksha Bagri (Sem 5), the leaderboard was effectively managed amid the nail-biting excitement.
Recognition and Praise
The quiz concluded with the announcement of results by Ms. Anuradha Dutta. Team 1 maintained its lead and emerged victorious with 165 points, followed by Team 3—comprising Muskan Pardhi (Sem 5), Utkarsh Chaturvedi (Sem 3), and Ayushmita Das (Sem 1)—with 100 points. The quizmasters, Varun and Priyanka, were lauded for their exceptional preparation, poise, and ability to create an inclusive and engaging environment. Their expertly crafted questions, which ranged from theoretical concepts to audiovisual challenges, showcased not only their depth of knowledge but also their dedication to the event’s success.
Special recognition was also given to Sourashis Mullick (Sem 5) for his flawless technical coordination, which ensured the smooth running of the event. The Economics department, under the guidance of its visionary faculty, was applauded for organizing such a stimulating and well-structured competition, which not only celebrated academic excellence but also fostered a spirit of collaboration and friendly rivalry among peers.
The event concluded with a heartfelt closing note by Dr. Anupa Ghosh, who commended the participants, winners, and organizing team for their outstanding efforts. ECO ENIGMA was not just a quiz; it was a testament to the vibrant intellectual culture of the Economics department at BESC.
