Embarking on an enlightening industrial visit to Howrah and Belgachia on March 15, 2023, with our esteemed teachers and friends proved to be an enriching experience. The focal point of our first exploration was Gem International, a manufacturing facility specializing in the production of railway suspension clamps, NFC stendors, and suspension cables.
Established two decades ago, Gem International caters to small and medium-sized suppliers. The factory boasts a diverse range of machinery, operating efficiently to ensure the production of high-quality goods. Notably, the facility adopts an automatic dice for streamlined manufacturing.
Intriguingly, Gem International imports goods from China, but our observation revealed a stark difference in quality. While the Chinese products cost approximately 22 rupees per piece, Gem International offers a competitive price of around 15 rupees per piece. The factory’s investment in a state-of-the-art machinery set, amounting to nearly 1 crore, showcases their commitment to modern manufacturing practices.
A noteworthy aspect is the eco-friendly nature of the industry, emphasizing a pollution-free production process. With a 3-person labor requirement per machine, Gem International contributes to employment opportunities while maintaining a sustainable working environment.
Operating under an 18% GST on the cost, Gem International strategically positions itself in the market, ensuring profitability. Our industrial visit not only exposed us to the intricacies of manufacturing but also highlighted the significance of quality and efficiency in the competitive business landscape.

Our journey into the heart of Howrah and Belgachia led us to our second factory specializing in the production of iron brakes for goods carrier trains. This facility, dedicated to crafting essential components for the railway industry, provided valuable insights into their unique manufacturing process.
Utilizing a diverse range of iron raw materials, including utensils, old iron, pig iron, hard coal, limestone, and more, the factory focuses on creating high-quality brake shoes. The intricate process involves molding the brake shoe by subjecting it to a dice, and after a meticulous 10 to 12 hours, the final product takes shape.
A key factor in their production is the use of pig iron as a major raw material, allowing them to minimize costs by incorporating iron scraps. The daily operation involves melting the iron to form the brake shoe, with a dedicated 8-hour labor shift per day. The factory strategically employs generators to power their manufacturing processes, ensuring a seamless and efficient production cycle.
Situated at the heart of Howrah Belgachia, this iron brake manufacturing unit exemplifies precision engineering and resource optimization, contributing significantly to the railway industry’s vital components.

Our exploration into industrial intricacies led us to a small-scale yet impactful factory dedicated to producing aluminum high-tension railway wire holding and electric wire holding clamps. Despite its size, this facility plays a vital role in providing essential fittings for both the railway and electric industries.
This compact unit exhibits impressive efficiency, churning out approximately 5000 units per day. Specializing in fittings crucial for the railway and electric sectors, the factory distinguishes itself by offering these products at a competitive and cost-effective price compared to other market competitors.
The manufacturing process unfolds seamlessly as a team of skilled workers collaborates in a chain-wise basis, ensuring precision and quality in every unit produced. This visit offered us valuable insights into the intricate world of aluminum fitting production, showcasing the factory’s commitment to enhancing connectivity in the railway and electric sectors.
