Industrial visits have their own place of importance in a student’s career. It helps to provide opportunities to involve in active learning experiences both inside and outside the walls of the classroom, as there always remains a gap between classroom teaching and corporate practice. It is here that by going beyond academics, industrial visits provide students with a much more relevant practical perspective of the actual workplace and the larger world of business. The Department of Commerce (Morning) took an initiative to reduce such a gap by arranging industrial visits for the students.
The students of Semester VI of the Morning session were given the opportunity to visit Greenply on 11th March 2023. Around 34 students from the Morning section along with 2 faculty members from the department went for the industrial trip in Kriparampur, Joka. There, the students got to know and understand the actual business operations at the ground level. The ply industry has different types of products like Veneers, Fiberboards, Hardboards, Impreg Timbers, Compreg Timbers, Block boards, and Lamin boards.
Starting from the log selection, peeling to veneer, drying till hot pressing, pre-pressing, sanding, and edge finish, the tour gave the students an interesting first-hand experience of the industrial process and helped develop their technical knowledge on practical grounds. Overall, the visit was an enlightening experience and students were much impressed by the scale of the operation and the technology used in the manufacturing process. The trip gave them a better understanding of the plywood manufacturing process and the effort that goes into producing high-quality plywood products. There they even understood the manufacturing process of ply, the production process, labeling, transportation, and sales.
Their interaction with the staff from the various departments provided a holistic view of the company. The visit was quite interactive and informative as they got to know about the manufacturing and marketing activities that go on in a plant. It was an enthralling experience for the students as it will help them to get a foothold in the corporate world. A token of appreciation in the form of a Memento was presented to the Factory Manager of Greenply, Mr. Partha Nath.
Thus, ‘Industrial Visits’ are the most practical approach towards learning through interaction, working practices, etc. and hence give a perfect reality check to the students.
