A student debate was organized by the Department of Education, The Bhawanipur Education Society College on the theme “Covid 19: Transforming the face of Education”, on 28th January 2022 from 10:15 am. The ongoing pandemic has not posed any challenges in organising co-curricular activities for students, and the event went down without a hitch on the Google Meet. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Rekha Nariwal, Associate Professor, Department of Education. Dr. Nariwal discussed how the topic of the debate was extremely relevant to our current circumstances under COVID-19, and how teachers and students had transitioned from traditional classroom setups to digital platforms to continue the teaching and learning process. The department invited respected Professor from our college, from the Department of English, Soumyajit Chandra to act as the debate moderator. It was a pleasure to have him with us and he conducted three rounds for the debate. In terms of debate participation, we had six students from Semester 1 with us. Bhavya Bhandari, Bindisa Mondal, and Sreyasi Das were among the students who spoke in favour of the motion, while Sourodeep Patra, Ritunanda Ghosh, and Priyanka Moitra spoke against it. Each of them was given five minutes to speak in round one, and it is a matter of admiration that they all passionately reflected their viewpoints. Participants were given the opportunity for counterargument in the next round, and students from opposing camps could be seen questioning each other’s ideas. The last round involved one member representing each side and summarising their standpoint. The best speaker of the debate was Ritunanda Ghosh. Finally, Sayandita Deb Roy, CWTT, Department of Education, offered the Vote of Thanks on behalf of the Department of Education, expressing her deepest gratitude to debate moderator Soumyajit Chandra, the participants, and the respected teachers from the Arts Department who graced the occasion with their presence and made it a memorable one.
