A webinar on the study of History of Science entitled “History of Science, Science in History” was organised by the Department of Mathematics, The Bhawanipur Education Society College on 15.06.2020 from 12:00 noon. It was an online lecture by Prof. Syamal Chakrabarti, an eminent teacher of Chemistry in the University of Calcutta. Prof. Chakrabarti is a distinguished science writer and science populariser who has received numerous honours including Satyendranath Basu Award (1999), Rabindra Puraskar (2009) and National Award for outstanding effort in science and technology communication through print media (2012).
The webinar started with the welcome address by Dr. Samir Kanti Datta, Vice-Principal (Science) of The Bhawanipur Education Society College. Following the speech of Dr. Datta, Prof. Chakrabarti started discussing the development of science and scientific history in the world. He discussed on how science, and in particular Mathematics evolved in Europe starting with the ages of Zeno and Pythagoras till the ages of Newton and Leibnitz. In course of his discussion, Prof. Chakrabarti emphasised the importance of the study of History of Science and the philosophy behind studying the History of Science.
The talk was followed by a question-answer session. Several webinar participants from undergraduate colleges of West Bengal showed their interest in the field by asking questions, all of which were answered by Prof. Chakrabarti. The program was hosted by Sugata Adhya, a departmental teacher of mathematics who ended the webinar by delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of the Department of Mathematics, The Bhawanipur Education Society College at around 2 PM
