When the whole world and the economy was in a shutdown, it was when the college decided that productivity and creativity should not stop. In order to maintain social distancing and to keep being productive , The Bhawanipur Education Society College organised an ONLINE ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION in the month of March,2020. The students were provided with two current topics : (a) Are The Banks Bankable ? and (b) Coronavirus and The Global Economy; to pen down their opinions and thoughts. The word limit for the competition was set at 1500 words. All essays were submitted via email thus ensuring that none of the students have to visit or move out of their homes ; thus fulfilling the motive of being Social Distant yet connected via research and creative writing. The competition received around 266 registrations by the deadline of 31st March,2020 and around 60 final entries were sent to Mr.Suvobrata Ganguly who judged them.
While it was a tough competition, four essays stood out among the 60 entries. Vishnupriya Roy Chaudhury, a third year student of B.Com, very aptly described the condition of Indian Economy and the Conditions of the Indian Banking System in her essay “ Are The Banks Bankable ?”. Her essay focused on not just the Yes Bank crisis but also took into account the effect of Economic crisis of 2008 on the Indian Banks and the slow rise in NPAs due to various scams and money laundering that took place over the decades especially during the time period of 2003-2019.
Forum Shah, an Ex-Student of the B.Sc. Department of Economics , pointed out how the on-going pandemic has forced not one but all nations to apply the policy of “ produce in your own country”. In her essay “ Coronavirus and The Global Economy” which she labelled as “ Coronavirus- Disrupting the game of economics!” ; she technically presented the current and the future scenario of the economies’ around the world. According to her , “ The disrupter of economy is promoter of essentials!”.
Swapneel Thakur , a third year student of Department of Commerce , in a very elucidate manner penned down his views on how COVID-19 is generalised with the other coronaviruses that were already present and how different are the effects of COVID-19 on the global economy as compared to other coronaviruses and pandemics that took place earlier. He commented on how important it is to maintain peace after the pandemic ends and before all the conditions are back to normal. In his views the 3-Track Approach of UN Policy on Income Generation in Post Conflict Scenario and Reintegration i.e Track A – Stabilizing Income Generation and Emergency Employment, Track B – Local economic recovery for employment opportunities and reintegration and Track C – Developing and adoptive national and sectoral policies most relevant for employment and support for private sector development, can help in regenerating the global economy.
Sk. Taosif Ali , a second year student of Department of Commerce , wrote on “ Coronavirus and the Global Economy”. His essays begins with how Coronavirus has negatively impacted the world but gradually mentioned about the positive effects on the global environment. He described how this virus has two sides and how we should hold on the positive effects of the coronavirus and try to balance our work life and personal life meanwhile protecting the environment with the hope that things go back to normality.
Although these four essays stood out, it is worth mentioning the names of participants who gave a good competition to the top four. Ahana Chanda, Ahana Sengupta , Arkya Ghosh, Ayush Singh, Chandni Kumari , Himanshu Jaiswal , Jetashree Paul , Kashish Burman , Maleeha Singh , Prashant Shukla , Rafae Mohammad Jamil, Sahin Ali Mullick , Sandeep Nair , Sarvesh Mundhra, Sayani Dey, Shibangi Chattopadhay , Shivam Saha ,Sinchita Majumdar,Sneha Yadav , Suraj Gareria , Uzair Ahmed and Zoheb Hussain are the few participants whose essays received an appreciation from the judge.
It can be said that the event was indeed successful in making students aware about the current economic conditions around the world, in improving their researching skills and in bringing out their creativity.
