Fierce competition in today’s global markets, the introduction of products with thwarted life cycles, and the sky high expectations of customers have forced business enterprise to invest in, and focus attention on, their supply chains. This, together with continuing advances in communications and transportation technologies (e.g., mobile communication, Internet, and overnight delivery), has motivated the continuous evolution of the supply chain and of the techniques to manage it. Having considered this as an important issue to discuss on, the Bhawanipur Education Society College recently organised a seminar on “Supply Chain Management” in the Society Hall on 22nd August, 2019 from 10:30 am onwards.
Prof Minakshi Chaturvedi, a faculty of BESC, inaugurated the event by quoting “You will not find it difficult to prove that battles, campaigns and even wars have been won or lost primarily because of logistics” and this seminar was presented as a conceptual understanding for what supply chain management is. She then carried on to introduce the chief guest as well as the main speaker of this seminar, Prof Shatabdi S Das to about 100 students from the department of B.Com Honours who seemed to be curious enough to broaden their azure sky with this diurnal events the college has been providing them.
Being welcomed upon the podium, the first thing that she spoke about was what Supply Chain is. It is basically a model from procurement of raw materials to its processing of goods and sending it to intermediaries till the customers receive it. In this age of internet, no one can ignore the importance of digitisation. Online channel of retail is a phygital mix which means physical and digital. She also spoke on QSR (QUICK SERVICE RESTORER); SKU (STOCK KEEPING UNIT) & went on explaining SCM’s of Amazon, Zara, H & M.
She also stated that now a days customers are becoming comfortable in online shopping, there is a machine/robot namely Grey Orange’s Sorter & Butler which helps companies to sort and stock the products according to their pin code, area of delivery for dispatch within 20 minutes. Companies like Flipkart, Pepperfry use such kind of robots for quick and error free delivery. An AV was also showed to the bunch of keen students of how ZARA’s SCM works.
A quiz round was conducted at the end of this interactive session in which the students willingly participated. The winners were distributed gifts and the audience were distributed chocolates. Prof Meenakshi Chaturvedi felicitated Prof Shatabdi S Das with a memento for her valuable time and this wonderful interactive session. The ambience really pleased her and everyone was looking forward to such sessions in future as well.
