“Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel.”
On 11th September 2025, The Bhawanipur Education Society College organised a public speaking event called Open Mic on the college turf. The event was open to everyone on campus who wished to showcase their talent. Its primary aim was to provide a stage for the students of BESC to speak their minds and present their talents in front of a live audience.
The event began at 10:30 A.M. with a short introductory speech by the organisers, welcoming the participants and the audience, and encouraging everyone to step up to the mic. As the first participants came forward to perform, the audience gradually grew, and soon more than 150 students from across all departments had assembled on the turf to enjoy the lively atmosphere.
The performances featured a wide range of acts — some students brought humour and joy through comedic skits or stand-up sessions, while others showcased their singing talent. The audience responded with loud applause and cheers, their excitement filling the turf. The event gradually transitioned into a celebration of literature and poetry, with over fifteen students taking the mic to pour out their hearts. Their words carried everything from melancholy to joy, from chaos to serenity. Some poets became instant favourites, with the audience eagerly anticipating their soulful verses.
As the poetry “mehfil” continued, a student dressed in black took the mic and stunned everyone with his angelic voice, dedicating a heartfelt song to mothers. His performance captivated the crowd within moments — students in the canteen and bystanders paused in their tracks, eyes fixed on him as though he were a professional singer. To keep the momentum going, another student came on stage and sang his heart out, turning the gathering into a chorus as the entire audience joined in. What began as a platform to encourage students to speak gradually transformed into a mini-concert, as more musicians and singers came forward to perform, much to the delight of the crowd.
The event was graced by Dr. Vasundhara Mishra, a well-known poet, journalist, and faculty member of BESC, who shared a few inspiring words before the poetry continued. The event concluded with a soulful solo musical performance by a student, bringing the curtain down at around 1:00 P.M.
Students later shared, anonymously, that they thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. Overall, the event was a resounding success, offering students a vibrant platform to express themselves and experience the joy of performing on a bigger stage.
Audacious! No, it is blatant stupidity if one believes that the glam of modern cinema and its mini-screen counterpart pertains only to the perseverance of cast, directors and crewmembers. The men working on their retina display screens are to be given equal credit, if not more. It is not oblivious that their efforts are overshadowed. …
