On 12th October 2026 (Monday), the Department of Sociology organised Sharodiya Mela, an exhibition-cum-sale of handicrafts by underprivileged artisans and small-scale entrepreneurs. This was an outreach and extension activity of the Department where various small-scale businesses and lost arts of Bengal were given a platform to showcase their items. The programme was inspired by ideas of empowerment, self-reliance and restoration of Bengal craftsmanship that get a boost during the festival days.

The grand event began with song and dance performances by the students of the department which ushered in the spirit of the biggest festival of Bengal, Durga Puja. There were 21 stalls in the exhibition, each showcasing different handicraft items such as patachitra, wooden masks, terracotta whistles designed on Harappan crafts, potteries, paintings, diyas, handcrafted home decor made from recycled products, homemade candles, chocolates, jute made products, Bengal handloom sarees and other clothes, jewelleries made by individual and grassroot entrepreneurs and many other handmade items of daily use. There were several NGOs exhibiting the handicrafts of individuals belonging from the marginalized groups. The students of the department also gave food stalls which were a huge success.
This programme served as a hub of pre-festival shopping, entertainment and culinary indulgence. It celebrated the spirit of empowerment, entrepreneurship and self-reliance and the spirit of Durga Puja.
