The Department of Bengali organized Rabindra–Nazrul Smaran, a discussion and musical programme, on 23 May 2026 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. in Room No. 547 to commemorate the enduring legacy of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam.

The programme featured a special presentation by Dr Sarbari Nandi, Professor of Bengali, Sivnath Sastri College, Pitam Sengupta, Rabindra researcher, and Ritam Sen, Esraj performer. Through songs, narration, and instrumental music, they explored the contributions of the women who collected, preserved, and voiced Rabindranath Tagore’s songs during his lifetime, thereby shedding light on an important yet often overlooked aspect of Rabindra Sangeet.

Prof. Debjani Ganguly and Prof. Tathagata Sen delivered insightful talks on the continuing relevance of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam in contemporary society. They emphasised the significance of the poets’ ideals of humanism, freedom, social harmony, and cultural inclusiveness in the present era.

Faculty members from different departments also participated in the programme by presenting songs and performances as a tribute to the two legendary poets. Their performances enriched the cultural atmosphere of the event and reflected the enduring appeal of the literary and musical heritage of Tagore and Nazrul.

The programme was attended by 50 participants, including teachers, students, and staff members. The event successfully fostered appreciation of Bengal’s rich cultural heritage and encouraged meaningful engagement with the works and ideals of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Outcome:

The programme enhanced awareness of the literary, musical, and cultural contributions of Tagore and Nazrul and inspired participants to reflect on the continuing relevance of their thoughts and ideals in contemporary life.
